The first Girls with Guns film I ever saw. Very Appropriate, since it's the movie that started the Girls with Guns genre! Moon Lee and Elaine Lui star as..well..Moon and Elaine, two members of the Angel organization, an elite crime-fighting unit. The other "Angels" are actually men, David Chiang as the head of the Angel Organization, and Hideki Saijo as the Japanese member of the team. Alex Fong is also on hand as a CIA operative working with the Angels. They are out to destroy the criminal organization operated by the villianous Madam Yeung, portrayed by Yukari Oshima, in a particularly evil performance.
Screen time is actually split evenly between the male and female stars. There are a couple good fight scenes involving the male characters, but it's clear the reason to watch is to see the women in action. In a great finale, first Moon and Elaine wipe out a warehouse full of goons and then fight Madam Yeung in a ferocious end battle which is a highlight of the film. This is why we watch Girls With Guns films, kids--To see these women use their physical talents in bone-crushing brawls. One thing Hong Kong movies are successful at is depicting the pain the fighters endure, and then transmitting that pain directly to the audience. You'll swear you can feel every punch, every kick, every broken bone, every puncture wound these women experience. I admit I was saying "Ouch", "Ow", & "That's got to sting" OUT LOUD every time Moon, Elaine, or Yukari sustained an injury.
Watching the climactic battle it's easy to see why the GWG films became such a hit. It's true that this movie isn't the best that Hong Kong has to offer, but it's still a damn enjoyable film! Anyway, "Angel" was a success, it launched Moon Lee's and Yukari Oshima's careers, and ever after if a HK film contained the word "angel" in the title, it was almost a sure bet it was a GWG movie!
