Welcome! We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society. Our territory goes along the Pacific Coast of Los Angeles County through Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey, Venice, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Malibu.

Mission Statement: The National Audubon Society's Mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity. As part of this, our chapter's particular mission is to be a center for wildlife education, habitat protection, and conservation issues that involve birds.

All submitted articles, letters, drawings and photographs will be considered for publication in our print newsletter, the AUDUBON imprint, as well as our web site, in an effort to stimulate and encourage an active participation in the natural sciences, conservation and birding.

Alert to Residents of Santa Monica

SMBAS member Louise Steiner tells us that the City of Santa Monica's plan to cut down about 50 mature ficus trees and replace them with ginkgo saplings is meeting with a lot of citizen opposition. There is a website, http://www.treesavers.blogspot.com/ , where you can get information, sign a petition, or take other action to support the movement.

Evening Meeting

Tuesday, October 7th, 7:30 p.m.

"Birds of Puerto Rico," with Lance Benner. Lance contributed owl observations to the Los Angeles County Breeding Bird Atlas and has conducted surveys for Northern Saw-whet and Flammulated Owls in the San Gabriel Mountains. He wrote a chapter on San Gabriel Mountain owls for the "Pasadena Audubon Society’s Birding Guide to the Greater Pasadena Area," which was published in 2005.

Lance is a Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, where he specializes in radar imaging of near-Earth asteroids. His research involves frequent trips to the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, where he often hears the gentle trilling and maniacal ‘laughter’ of Puerto Rican Screech Owls.

We meet at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 4th Street (between Colorado and Broadway), Santa Monica. Parking is under the building; metered spaces are free after 6:00 p.m., and there are numerous free Visitor Parking spaces on the lower levels. We meet on the first floor – the room number will be posted. Meetings begin at 7:30 sharp with a little business, and then our main presentation. Refreshments will be served.

Our next evening meeting will be on Tuesday, November 4th.

Malibu Lagoon Enhancement Plan The Heal The Bay website has a comprehensive page up on the new restoration plan for Malibu Lagoon. It includes PDF documents for the plan itself, and lots of explanatory notes and graphics. This is  Must-See for everyone who visits the lagoon.
