The ZanScripts is a futurist poetic novel set in San Francisco. Zan, an irreverent but compelling spiritual prophet and hermaphrodite, lives unknown to all but a small core group during the late twentieth century, mysteriously disappearing at the turn of the millennium. Surrounding the disappearance of this beautiful androgynous prophet forms a new world religious and political order. The Era of Zani will not erupt upon the scene until the late twenty-first century, and is to dominate the next thousand years. Surrounding Zan are the founders of the "Neozoic Era": a wandering poet, Agatha Agetes, who is to become First Leader, her twin brother, Andrew Wesley, an alienated intellectual, and a homeless madwoman, Theia, who bears an illustrious past and an enigmatic relationship to Zan. |
Setting the stage for the new millennium, The ZanScripts is a poetic, witty and philosophical romp through the vagaries of the twentieth century. The novel examines current preoccupations of spirituality, gender, the state of the arts and sciences, and the environment. Pseudo nonfiction is deftly applied to the unfolding narrative. The timeframe of the novel effortlessly conflates present and future intermingling poetry, fiction, and docudrama into a trenchant fin de siecle perspective. The ZanScripts is above all a map of consciousness, integrating the manifold contradictions of contemporary life into a unique and powerful personal vision of a transformative future.
Agatha Agetes: This is the way it happened... On the fifth day of the last week of the old century, at dawn we began the rite of four winds, we did a final review of the topographical maps and charted out our directions. As the prophet sent off each of us with proper gear and a pep talk, Zan's ever dark slender form seemed to me illumined with zigzag lightning bolts of energy. Zan pointed me southeast directly into the sun and uphill.
It’s a hard path going out: uphill and into the east. Wear sunglasses and smear on the sun screen. But the nights will be warmer.
We talked over my plans which were on the second night to bivouac inside a designated summit, cross to the south side then in the morning turn around and descend to the west following the sun until it set.
It should set right over the encampment, commented Zan, who suddenly looked worried.
If it’s cloudy, Zan added, you have the compass. Zan held me and whispered,
You’re more alive than I have ever dreamed of being. No matter what, you will live.
I was frightened.
You’re as alive as I am—you’re the essence of life.
Zan replied, I flicker like a flame inhales the wind, to fall again to breathing fire.

praise for Celeste Newbrough's first book, Pagan Psalms (OneCraft, 1982)
Pagan
Psalms is a powerful, synthesizing poetic work.. While exploring spiritual themes,
Celeste [Newbrough] never departs from an essentially naturalististic approach.
The result is a rare attainment: a spiritual journey that rings true as literature.
La Riviere Sans Fin, Paris
In
an effort to speak what has never before been spoken [Newbrough] reaches beyond
the conventions of language and culture to create a coherent new symbolism.
Britta Stovling, Author of Atertagandet, Stockholm
Tribal...
exalted... triumphant!
