Private
Eye* Poetry
A "private eye" is a jeweler's
loupe, a type of magnifying lens that you hold to your eye to view
objects with 5X magnification. We recently went on a field trip to
Lake Rim Park and collected nature items to use as the subjects of
poems. It's amazing how different things look when viewed through a
private eye! Here are some of our best poems. |

Corn Husks
They crumple like
a dried onion peel.
The lines in the skin
look like spaghetti noodles.
Corn husks are the color
of the desert sand.
They are as light
as a feather in your hand.

Dried Corn husks
Corn husks remind me of
Stalks of bamboo,
Growing by a beautiful river,
Corn husks remind me of
Freshly cut
Onion peels,
Corn husks remind me of
A dry sandy desert,
With no oasis,
Cornhusks remind me
of so much.

Acorns
Little acorns make me think
Of a bowl of yummy
Chocolate pudding.
A marble browned by dust and grime.
The shell is a dirty bowl
Waiting to be cleaned
In time.
The cap reminds me
Of a fancy hat
worn to birthday parties.
Many things I think of when I
See a little acorn.

Cotton
The cotton reminds me
of a spider’s web
or a big furball.
It looks like pillow stuffing
or some rabbit’s hair.
A dead rose
or blood veins,
whatever I can know.
Giant cotton balls,
or furry toenail clippings,
a very white tail,
or some fuzzy tape.
That is what cotton reminds me of.

Mushrooms
An elephant’s
ears
flaring
white slices
of cheese
an enormous foot
ready to
step on me
a girl with
a bad hair
day
a delicate white flower
blooming
vanilla ice cream with
chocolate chips.
They all remind
me of my mushroom.

Mushrooms
A mushroom is
an umbrella
in the rain.
It’s a mini house
for the beetles.
It’s a hat for
a clown.
It’s also
an ice cream
bowl without
the ice cream.
If you look
at a mushroom
with your imagination
you will see all
these things.
