Thanks to Ruth Dick for following directions:
"After you enter the woods from the hillside meadow at the start of
the trail, the trail goes in pretty much straight, and as you near
the gully, the trail bends right taking you away from the gully.
Then you have a sharp left turn in the trail, it was soon after this
left turn that I encountered the flock of birds and the varied thrush.
As you hike this trail, you will eventually come to burned trees and
then to a nice grassy meadow and more burned trees! It's in these
burned trees across from the meadow where 3 toed woodpeckers are
often found. (This meadow area is maybe 1 and 1/2 miles from the
trailhead). Today a female downy and a female Hairy woodpecker,
plus a male 3 toed woodpecker were all in a dead ponderosa tree
with brown needles--it would be on your left as you hike the
trail before entering more trees after the meadow."

(Seasonal Access; due to inclement weather)
To Search for White-tailed Ptarmigan (2006):
They are being reported about 2 out of 4 days at:
1. Seven birds: 30 yards below east side of summit
(check to grassy areas below rocky summit)
It helps to be one of the first people up there in
the morning as the area gets many visitors daily.
2. Additional Seven Birds: First pullover on way down from
summit parking area (check below ridge to west of pullover)
3. Two Birds: Less often but found here also; 1st sharp switchback
after straight road leading south (uphill) from Summit Lake.
To Search for Brown-capped Rosy Finches:
Watch the southwest corner of Summit Lake
(especially in the morning, but have patience,
they show up throughout the day.

Turn Right and follow Upper Bear Creek Road to wildlife area.
NOTE: Vehicles prohibited from Labor Day to June 14th.
To search for possible Black-backed Woodpecker:
Go to Wildlife Area Main parking area (picnic table, outhouse. sign etc.).
I parked here and rode my bike from this point although the road goes
through with an open gate so it would be possible to drive about a mile
further up and park at a pullout - a notable one on the left just past
a pillar-like rock outcropping looks like it would accommodate 3 to 4 cars.
From here (again about 1 mile from the main parking lot) follow
the main road up a rather steep hill (not quite to the top) see a sign
on the left that talks about the merits of removing all the evergreens
for the sake of the aspens and a few feet further on the left will be
a road branching off (blocked by a wire rope with a "no vehicle" sign
suspended from it in the middle). I road my bike a short ways (maybe 500 ft.)
up this road to a cleared section with a 55 gallon rusted barrel and
some stacked narrow logs - rocks on the left.
Just before this clearing a trail leads off to the left (a deep curved
rut in the road sorta pointing to it). I took this trail, which quickly
became almost indistinct for probably 1000 yards, past a rock outcropping
on the right to an notable outcropping on the left with 3 or 4 trees sort
of growing out of the top. Here on a tree (rock outcropping side) about
3 feet from the "path" was where I saw the woodpecker. He flew off to
some rather distant trees on the other side. The forest is not real dense
here and some burned tree stumps still remain from a past fire.

From the intersection of Colorado State Highway 82 and Highway 133,
head south on Highway 133, through the town of Carbondale and at
about 2.5 miles from the intersection (mentioned above) you need
to turn left (east) on Prince Creek Road (111 road/CR 5). Follow this road
for about 5 miles or so (it turns to dirt at about mile 1.5) until you come to
a potentially confusing intersection. Keep right to follow the road to Dinkle Lake.
The parking area for the trailhead for Mount Sopris is at Dinkle Lake,
about a mile and a half from the confusing intersection.

From either Fort Collins or Briggsdale (Crow Valley Campground):
My favorite loop is taking highway 14 to CR 61 (8.0 miles west of Briggsdale);
N 40 38.3335 W 104 29.2213 ALT: 4961'
turn North on CR 61 and drive 2 miles; turn East on CR 94 and drive 1 mile
to CR 63; turn South on CR 63 and drive 1 mile to CR 92; turn East on CR 92
and drive 1 mile to CR 65; turn South on CR 65 and drive 1 mile back to hwy 14.
Most productive locations for Mountain Plover are northeast corner of
CR 94 & CR 61 and southwest and north of intersection of CR 94 & CR 63.
(CR 94 & CR 63 Field: N 40 40.109 W 104 28.0652 Alt: 5059')
I have observed McCown's Longspurs from west side of CR 94 & CR 61
and Chestnut-collared Longspurs from east side of same intersection.
Check for Burrowing Owls at the Prairie Dog village 0.5 miles south
of intersection of CR 61 & CR 94.
Another successful loop for Mountain Plover has been:
Driving along highway 14, stop at intersection with CR 51 (8 miles east of
Ault). Mountain Plovers & Burrowing Owls have been reported southeast of
intersection. Also watch for Long-billed Curlews after a rain shower.

Then drive North on CR 51 for 3 miles to CR 90; turn east on CR 90 and
drive 3 miles back to highway 14. Mountain Plover have been observed
especially on west side of CR 51 and at northeast corner of CR 51 & CR 90.

From Boulder Turnpike, highway 36; take Canyon Blvd West (Left)
Take Canyon to 9th Street, and turn right climbing the hill to Mapleton Ave.
Continue west on Mapleton past Memorial Hospital to the parking along the
street just as it enters the foothills in Sunshine Canyon.
Here you will find a picnic shelter. Going north from the shelter
and bearing to the right gets you on the Sanitas Valley Trail.
Bearing left at the shelter takes you on the Mount Sanitas Trail.
As you go up the hill on this trail, you will come to a wooden
footbridge over an irrigation ditch.
To Search for the Sage Sparrow 10/6:
Cross the irrigation ditch, pass the second set of
trash containers where a trail comes in from the east.
Before another trail joins at an acute angle there is
a clump of Hackberry trees (gnarled, leaves with insect galls).
The birds were feeding along the main trail just on the north
side of this clump and south of the willows at the trail junction.

Bill Kaempfer:
"We started just before the beginning of CO 14 at Muddy Pass.
There is a road to the north from US 40, I think it is the only
turn off the highway to the north between the Jackson County line
and Muddy Pass and it has a number something like 308.
The road which is in fairly good shape, considering its location,
goes into an “open” camping area of mixed high forest."
Two miles West of Muddy Pass, travel North on Forest Road 308.
At first fork, drive right; at second ford, drive left.
