Genesee Mountain Park

Go west on Interstate 70; get off at the next exit AFTER Genesee Mountain
exit 254. This exit (probably 253) has signs for Chief Hosa Lodge and
Stapleton Drive. At the stop sign turn right, then right again onto a
gravel road (Stapleton Drive) that parallels I 70. The road makes a
sweeping, almost U-turn to the left and starts down a hill. In about 100
yards you will see a parking area on the left (with a Denver Mtn. Parks
outhouse below the parking lot). Park there. Walk down Stapleton Drive a
couple of hundred yards to the first set of houses, on the right. A sort
of entrance gate there announces a "Private Drive." Selbys live in the
first house on the right.

Georgia Pass

From Highway 285 and C470 on the west side of Denver,
Drive 52.0 miles southwest on Hwy 285 to Jefferson.
Travel northwest on CR 35 (Michigan Creek Road).

To Search for American Three-toed Woodpeckers
at their traditional location (and 7/3).
Drive 4.1 miles pass the gate to Michigan Creek Campground.
There is a gravel road heading south here.
Walk up trail for about 200 yards and check trees to west.
(NOTE: ATTW are easier to find at Pine Valley Ranch Park).

Drive West into Longmont and continue West past Main Street (approx. 7 miles) on 3rd street (same road)

Trees along creek are good for Warblers and other migrating birds.

From Boulder, take Diagonal Highway 119 to Hover Road.

Grand Junction Wildlife Area

From Interstate 70, take Exit 28 (24 Road).
Drive 1.5 miles South on 24 Road to Highway 50/6.
Travel 2.5 miles Southeast on Hwy 50 to 1st & Grand Avenue.
Go West across Bridge to Redlands on Highway 340 (Broadway).

In approx. 0.9 miles, turn Left on Monument Road (2nd stoplight)
Then in 300 yards turn Left again on D Road.
(D Road turns into Rosevale Road); continue on Rosevale Road.
In approx. 0.8 miles from Monument Rd, turn Left onto C1/2 Road.
Follow C1/2 Road to where it corners with 25 3/4 Road.
White-throated Sparrow was seen in the heavy brush near
the gate at the corner of C1/2 and 25 3/4 Roads.

Lake Granby, Grand Lake & Shadow Mountain Reservoir

Take Interstate 70 to Highway 40 (exit 233)
Travel North to Highway 34 (just north of Granby)
Drive northeast on Highway 34 past Lake Granby approximately 14 miles.
Turn onto the main road that leads to Grand Lake.

Shadow Mountain Reservoir is connected to Grand Lake by a channel.

For best viewing locations:
At the first opportunity, turn right and pass the post office and a school.
At the stop sign by the school, turn right, then left onto Lakeside Drive.
Follow this street as it parallels Shadow Mountain Reservoir on your right.
Go over a slight rise and down the other side, and turn right to cross the
bridge. You may park along the side of the road. There is almost always
a large area of open water on the right in Shadow Mountain Reservoir.

To reach the Grand Lake end of the channel, go back to the street that you
just left and turn right. At the first opportunity, turn right again and
there will very soon be a parking lot on the right that is labeled
Point Park. Park here and walk a short distance to the foot bridge.
From the bridge you can look out over Grand Lake, and there is usually
a large area of open water here.

Swarm of all three species April 11 at Granite.
The site used is 0.4 down Chaffee Co. Road 397
From County Road 396 (o.6 from US 24).

Travel south through Granite and cross the only one lane bridge across river.
Turn left (East) and drive 0.4 miles to house on the right (south) with many feeders.
This is private property, please bird from the little road.

Greater Prairie-Chicken

Finding Greater Prairie Chickens not on Lek is quite difficult
One fair spot, especially after a dusting of snow is the corn field below:
Take Interstate 76 to exit 149
Go South on Highway 55 (Fleming Road)
Travel 4.6 miles to Logan County Road 46
Turn Left (East) on CR 46; travel 3.8 miles to corn fields.
Up to 14 GPCH were observed here during last snow storm.

Latest spring 1999/2001/2004 sightings were found by parking at CR 46 and CR 89
I then walked west to dirt road that cuts corn fields in half
I walked 1.0 miles North to last cultivated field
A male GRPC was booming in tall circle of yellow grass to the west

Seven birds were observed after a fall snow storm on 11/23/2001.
One bird was observed on 11/24/2001.
Fourteen+ birds were observed after a fall snow storm in November 2002.
One bird was observed on 12/4/2002.

Greeley Eurasian-Collared Doves

Doves are found at various locations in the Greeley Area:

1. Maxfield observed 8 Eurasian-collared Doves again east of Greeley.
Take U.S. 85 on east side of Greeley to 8th St. exit. Go East to Fern Ave.
which is right across from National Guard HQ(about 3 mi. east of U.S.85),
south across the Poudre River. Just south of river crossing Doves were seen in
tall tree just west and south of the bridge. If not found there, go to next
right turn, approx. 1/4 mile, turn right on 16th St. and check trees and
yards on both sides up to top of hill. Good time seems to be 10-12 in a.m
when they are warming in the sun.

Greenhorn Meadows Park

From Interstate 25, take Colorado City Exit 74
Drive West on Highway 165 for 3 or 4 miles.
Best to park at bridge over creek on Greenhorn Rd, (Highway l8l)
shortly after turning left off CSH l65.
Walk downstream into steep canyon. The Carolina Wren is found
between the bridge and the campground about 1/3 miles downstream.

Greenlee Preserve and Waneka Lake

From the Boulder Turnpike (Highway 36), take the Broomfield Exit
Drive North on Highway 287 (becomes South Public in Lafayette)
Turn left (West) on West Emma which is off of South Public in old town Lafayette.
Take West Emma until it dead ends at a small park at the lake.

To reach Greenlee Preserve directly:
Continue north on Hwy 287 to West Baseline Road.
Travel 0.7 miles west on Baseline Road to Gold Hill Road.
Drive South one block on Gold Hill Road to Salina Street.
Then east one block on Salina to South Fork Drive.
Park near intersection and walk east on trail.

To search for Swamp Sparrow 1/7 & 1/20:
Take trail east 100 feet to when it turns south.
Sparrow was in this area with Song Sparrows.

(This would be back where you came from; approx. one city block).
This area is good for mountain species.
Look above Green Mountain Falls (not town, but Falls) for Black Swift in season.

An Adult Female was feeding juvenile male bird along forest road & 0.1 miles south of CG entrance.
Birds worked favorite trees along forest road 118 and then flew to southwest corner of CG.

From Highway 50 and Hwy 135 in Gunnison,
Travel approx. 4.3 miles West on Hwy 50 to Gunnison County Road 32.
