Collecting flags on stamps

A General Outline for Discussion

Many thanks to Bob Murray, of the Robert Murray Stamp Shop, Edinburgh, Scotland, for hosting the images on this page!

CHALLENGES in deciding what to collect:

  1. Designs include all sorts of flags for different reasons and in different formats. It's hard to decide on what qualifies as a "flag stamp".
  2. Catalogs don't show all images or provide excellent descriptions, so there are some appropriate stamps out there which are not well identified. What is out there to collect?
  3. Stamps can be collected in different ways, such as mint/used, single, souvenir sheet, miniature or full sheet, on a cover, etc. What form is the best for collecting?  Example 1  Example 2  Example 3

CATEGORIZING THE STAMPS according to the type of flag image:

Flag designs on stamps and/or souvenir sheets (Remembering that a flag design doesn't have to be the national flag of a country):  Example 1  Example 2

  1. A flag is shown in true form but not necessarily in full color
  2. The main design of the flag can be altered to fit an artist's desire (stylized)  Example
  3. The flag might be in a tab or the margin, or otherwise outside the body of the actual stamp  Example
  4. A flag can be represented in forms of national colors versus an actual flag  Example 1  Example 2

CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED with collecting:
  1. There are a number of professional catalogs in the world, all dealing with the general topic of stamps. Many catalog publishers have their own system for assigning catalog numbers. One stamp design may have several different catalog publishers' numbers.
  2. A catalog might not include some stamp designs, according to the individual catalog's publishing criteria. A stamp may have a number from one source while not being recognized by another source.
  3. A set of stamps may have only one or two which show flags. Do I collect the whole set or just the flag stamps? Example
  4. How deep do I want to go in collecting stamps which are available in a number of variations (coils, perforations, printing methods, minor color variations and shifts, etc.)
  5. What forms should I collect? (Singles, covers, sheets, etc.)
  6. What's the best way to keep track of the items in my collection? When collecting other than individual stamps, how do I catalog them?
  7. What's the best way to store my collection (in addition to the regular parameters of collecting sensitive material)? How should I display my collection?
  8. How do I know when I have them all???

Let me know what you think!

It may be that we cannot come to a single concensus, so maybe we need some parameters for all of this!
