Photo of earthrise & Moon taken by Alan Shepard combined with a photo of CSM from the Lunar Module Antares

“I was the one who named the command module ‘Kitty Hawk.’

I did it to honor the place where it all began with the Wright Brothers

and felt this name was most appropriate.”

-Stuart Roosa

This is a photo of the CSM "Kitty Hawk" taken from the Lunar Module. As Alan Shepard descended towards the Moon, he took this earthrise photo showing a sliver of the Earth rising above the Moon. While Stuart Roosa carried tree seeds in his PPK (Personal Property Kit), Alan Shepard carried golf balls.  When Alan Shepard was on the Moon, he made a handle into a golf club and shot two golf balls.

“Apollo 14 means a lot of things to me but the biggest thing it means to me is pride.

I am proud to be part of our entire dynamic space program."
