Variety "A" - Incorrect

(NOTE 1: Apparently, the population error
was discovered before the cards were actually
distributed. All examples of this variety that I've seen
have a small black six-pointed star printed or stamped
(approximately) over the '1' of 1,648,690 in an attempt
to make the number appear more accurate. )

far known only on cards with the "ARBUCKLE'S" printing variety on the back.)

above is a detail image from the back of an
interesting variety found on a few of these West
Virginia cards and originally identified by Jerry
Anderson. It was first printed incorrectly,
bearing "No 54", which should be for
Pennsylvania. It appears that this error was
discovered before the cards were distributed, and
that a sufficient number of these were wrong to
make it worthwhile for the lithographer to create
an overprint to correct the error. Two solid bars
were printed over the original "No 54",
and the correct "57" was printed to the
right of it. This type of overprint correction has also been found on the Maine (#52), Pennsylvania (#54), Maryland (#56) and Florida (#59) cards in this series. I'd be very interested in hearing from other collectors who've run across similar misprints on this and any other Arbuckle cards. |

series didn't include any additional descriptive
information for the individual states or territories, the
subsequently issued
Illustrated
Atlas of the United States of America
did devote several paragraphs to
West Virginia
