Welcome to my Azalea Garden!

This Garden Page is dedicated to my Mother, who never really liked to garden, but who loved the springtime flowers, including azaleas and dogwoods. In her later years, she grew to love magnolias, especially the ones I painted. She is now deceased, but when I lived in Denver, she would call me every year and tell me how beautiful the azaleas looked.

 My Azaleas

This Spring the Azaleas have been more beautiful than ever. The weather has been mild all winter, so the buds didn't get burned due to a sudden frost after they began to open, and we haven't had a hard rainstorm to knock all of the blossoms off.

Don't EVEN ask me to remember the names of all of the azaleas. I know I have Formoas, Pride of Mobile, Hinode Girl, Prince of Orange and Coral Bell. I have red ones, light pink ones, dark pink ones, purple ones, white ones, coral ones, and fucsia ones. The only one that I don't have is a pale pink-lavender. I'm looking for one.

I hope you enjoy your visit through my yard. Please allow time for the pictures to open.

Bedroom Window Azaleas

Directly behind our bedroom window. I love looking
at the flowers and the birds taking a bath in the mornings.

There is a Nandina plant in front with red berries that
can't be seen with the colorful azaleas in the background.

Red Azaleas

This plant is under the huge Live oak in the front yard.

It isn't a large variety, but its small red flowers are very colorful. Spanish Moss has fallen from the tree onto the azalea.

Front Walk Azaleas

Azaleas along the walk to our front porch.
The temporary greenhouse we set up for all of the tender
plants this past winter is still up, but will come down soon.

(We now have a greenhouse and no longer enclose the front porch.)

Fantasy of Colors

This photo is from 1999 of the azaleas near the woods.
There seem to be much more color, but it was before I trimmed and shaped them.

Backyard 2000

The same view in March 2000.

In March of 2007, my neighbors azalea bush was gorgeous!

Wild Woods Azalea

A number of years ago, I rescued a wild azalea from across
the main street into my subdivision just before they started
a new housing development. For years it just sat there,
scrawny and skinny, down in my woods,
having only a few blooms.

I decided to revive it
and have worked on it for several years.
I started to prune it and fertilizer it.
Now it has a fair number of blooms, and is absolutely gorgeous!

These flowers appear at the tip of a woody stem.
It almost looks like a honeysuckle plant;
in fact, it has the scent of a musky honeysuckle.
This azalea is a real treasure!

(Update - 2008: Alas, I lost my woods azalea to Hurricane Katrina - the saltwater surge killed it; however, I did manage to get another from across the street and after about three years, it seems to have taken hold and is surviving. When I planted it, I had trees around it, but Katrina blew the big hickory tree over that gave it shade, so it struggled for a while. It bloomed this spring and looks very healthy now.)

I hope you enjoyed my azaleas. Please visit my other garden flowers.
