COLOR
MIXING |

INTRODUCTION:
| TWO
KINDS OF COLOR MIXING |
The way we see color makes it possible
to mix two or more colors to make new colors.
This website is about the
two kinds of color mixing.
Colored
light does not mix to produce the same
colors as colorants such as paint, dyes,
and inks.
This website also
shows basic ways that these two color mixing systems are used.

STAGE
LIGHTING - TV SCREENS - MONITORS
The one
type of color mixing is used when new colors are made by the
combination of different colored
lights. This kind of color mixing is used
in stage lighting, where any color of lights may be chosen. Aside from
this creative use of color
lighting for live performance events, all colors can actually be
displayed using only lights
of three colors. These
three colors are the basic colors used
for television screens, video, and
computer monitors. These
colors are:

2. MIXING COLORS
OF PAINTS - INKS - DYES
Also
called subtractive*
Color Mixing
The other side of color mixing is when color paints, inks,
markers, and other coloring media are combined. Again in this case, many
different colors can be mixed to make new colors. Yet it is
possible to make almost all colors by mixing just three. These
three colors are:
There is a connection
between the first three colors: red,
blue
and
green,
and the second three colors: cyan,
magenta
and yellow.
If any two colors of one group are mixed together in equal amounts, they
will make a color from the other group.

There are three
primary colors for each of the two color mixing systems.

Why
are these two groups of three colors are
called
primary
colors?
1.
The three primary colors are the minimum
number of colors that can be mixed to
make the greatest number of other
colors.
2.
In each of these groups, the primary
colors cannot be made by mixing other
colors.
Why are the colors of
mixing light
called additive, and the colors of
mixing paints subtractive?
See
the topics listed in the above left column to find out more about
additive and subtractive color mixing.
