Marion Co. Iowa and Surrounding Area in 1895 Atlas.

In the late 1840s eastern Iowa Territory was opening up for settlement and many Pendroy families moved into the Marion & Jasper County, Iowa area.

Pendroy families, including those of Eli Pendroy , Jacob Pendroy , James Pendroy , Jacob Andrew Pendroy , James Martin Pendroy , and Eli H. Pendroy , .....all registered with the Marion County, Iowa On-Line Pioneer Project as Marion County Iowa Pioneers by settling in Marion County, Iowa - in Red Rock and (Summit Township) on or before 1856.

The 1856 Census showed, as Heads of Household, all these known Pendroys were in census living in the same general vicinity of Marion County together: Eli Pendroy, Jacob Pendroy, James Pendroy, Jacob Andrew Pendroy, William and America Jane (Pendroy) Burns, John and Nancy (Pendroy) Young, John C. and Mary E. (Pendroy) Marmon, Eli H. Pendroy.

Jacob Pendroy is believed to be first known Pendroy family to pioneer into the Marion and Jasper County Iowa area near Monroe.  The 1850 census records,  as was known, that Jacob Pendroy and some of the other Pendroy family came 1 year earlier to the Marion  and Jasper County area, beginning in 1849.

In the "Marion County History of 1881" Jacob Pendroy is recorded on page number 687 Summit Township (Chapter III).

"On March 3, 1854 the petition of Jacob Pendroy and sixty-one others, was presented to the County Judge asking that the township of Red Rock be divided and a new township to be called Summit be organized. The petition was granted and the first Monday in April fixed as the time for holding the organization election." John C. Donnel was appointed to carry out the provisions of the order, and the house of Jacob C. Brown was designated as the place for holding the first election."

In addition, the old Pendroys were in  the first Methodist Episcopal (Methodist) in Marion County, Iowa in 1855 near Otley Iowa, which is 4 miles S.E. of Monroe, Iowa.

Their involvement in the first Methodist Episcopal (Methodist) in Marion County, Iowa in 1855 is published in the "History of Marion County Iowa on pages 690-691:

"Methodist Episcopal Church: The first M.E. Church was organized by Reverend R.B. Allender, in 1855. The following persons constituted the class: W.B. Keeler and wife, Boyd Donnel and wife, Thos. Honnold and wife,  Eli Pendroy, Jacob Pendroy and wife, Jacob Honnold and wife, John Young and wife and Wm. Donnel and wife.

The pastors were:

A frame church was erected during the summer of 1870. It is 30 by 40 feet, will comfortably seat 250 and cost $2,500.

The church when first organized used the summit school-house as a place of worship.

There is a Sunday School in connection with the church, with an attendance of about forty. The Superintendent is Wm. Durose."

Author note: Surnames Young, Honnold, and Donnel were all married to Pendroys and many were neighbors. Mrs. John Young was Nancy M Pendroy b 29 May, 1829 Ohio - m John William Young. (Jacob's daughter)

Margaret (Berry) Donnel born 1848 was Rachel (Pendroy) Berry's daughter. Rachel was Jacob's daughter.

John Baldwin Pendroy (son of James M. Pendroy) was married to Forrest Belle Honnold.

Author Note: The Monroe area of Jasper County Iowa is in extreme southern Jasper county., near the Marion County line.  In 1850 more Pendroy families lived south of the nearby county line in Marion County Iowa - about 3 to 4 miles away around Otley and Red Rock. There is some information about Pendroy families in the 1850 census of Jasper Co. IA.

The Pendroys that came into Iowa Territory in the late 1840s and 1850s  had been in Indiana in 1830s and 1840s.  Before that they were in Greene County, Ohio from 1803 to 1820s.

Author's family - is from the Eli Pendroy, James Pendroy, Eli H. Pendroy, Edgar Grant Pendroy, Dale Arthur Pendroy. All lived and are buried in or near Monroe, Iowa.
