Current Rescues

You see above, Tara, our PosterBird For TARA

(Tucson Avian Rescue & Adoption).

This is how he looked at the vet's office one hour after we ransomed him from where he had been.

Hopefully, most rescued birds aren't this bad off. Some are, and for others, the wounds are on the inside of their souls. Those are the ones that sometimes take the most time to heal. It is through our persistence, love, and education that they can leave their bad experiences behind.

We here at Avian Safely Home hope to help you who have already rescued a parrot by providing information and resources you can use now as well as return to over & over again. If you have favorite links or other resources you would like to have added, please email me with the information.

For those of you considering rescuing a parrot perhaps these pages will provide you with information that you need for that rescue. Whether it will happen through local rescue groups or an online organization, you can gather the information for when you will need it.

Always be prepared.

On each of our pages I hope to have information as well as examples of actual rescued birds. These have been provided by Avian Safely Home members as well as other friends.

As ListMom, I invite you to join our mailing list

Education

The way that we are going to be successful in doing the best for our avian friends is to share with others. Education is our key. I can't say it enough.

We are relatively new when it comes to aviculture when compared to our other pets such as : cats, dogs, etc....

By observing our birds closely, we are better able to learn and thus secure a future

for our Feathered Kids......aka FIDS......

This site is continually under construction, so please keep it bookmarked and stop by frequently..

TARA

TARA is a local and an online national rescue organization. My friend Barbara & I started TARA because we were asked to rescue or adopt many parrots by people. Most of our combined flocks are rescued or someone elses' castaway parrot. So when our personal flocks hit our limits, we created an organization to help find loving homes for parrots who needed them.

We do not keep parrots in a location like a refuge or sanctuary ( even though we are in contact with and support some). Instead we have prospective adopters fill out an application form so that we can better match someone's abilities to the parrots who are looking for a home. We review these and keep them on file for when we hear of a bird that needs a new home that best matches their wants. Sandy was one who waited for an Amazon for what she felt was a long time. She now has Tabasco .......you can read about them on the Pictures page.

Sometimes it just doesn't work out as well as we would wish and a bird needs to come back to TARA for a new home. Usually by that time we have been busy researching where this bird will be better placed. We adopted out a Nanday Conure, Thai Bird, who is now in a very nurturing home after doing well, but not good enough in his first home.

In cases where we either find a lost bird or have to take a bird RIGHT AWAY, we do have a friend with no birds who acts as our quarantiner. The bird stays there until all the medical reports have come back and it is okay to place the parrot.

TARA has even reunited lost parrots with their owners......

Once a match has been made after phone calls and an in-home interview, the birds go to their new homes. We are always there to help answer questions and assist the new owners with any areas they are not comfortable in. We have created a Foster Bird Parent form that the quarantiner fills out while the bird is in his care. This enables the new "parent" to see what was going on with the bird prior to it's coming to live there. Such as:

"Tara likes Madonna in the morning......"

One local adoption that I was trying to make turned out to be a cross country affair. A fellow lister heard that I was trying to place a couple of Quakers. We were in the process of working out the air fares and times, when my friend discovered that she had to take a business trip to Tucson. Since she was coming here, she was able to take the birds home to Virginia with her on the plane.

There have been rescues that I have helped with where I have never met the adopter face to face, only keyboard to keyboard. Picasso, the Sun Conure found his new family that way. I had an online friend who decided that she could open her heart to this bird that needed a home.....

If you know of a bird that needs a new home or wish to open your home and heart to one, please let me know......

My personal feelings are very strong when it comes to Education.

This is the only way we can make a difference!

Not only by just educating ourselves........but others

By offering to help that pet store that doesn't know about some of the newer things we do for birds now.

By complaining to manufacuturers when you know a product needs to be modified or changed completely.

By keeping an eye on legislation to ensure our birds remain safe from archaic laws and red tape.

Okay......I'm off my soapbox for now......
