Lake County
History <-> Genealogy
Lake County first created in 1855 : 1st named Superior, 2nd St. Louis,
then renamed Lake in 1856.
The COUNTY SEAT is Two Harbors.
Lake County is located in northeastern Minnesota, with Lake Superior
as its southern border. Neighboring Minnesota counties include: Cook county
to the east, and St. Louis
county to the west. The Canadian Province of Ontario is its northern
neighbor.
Most of County is encompassed within the Superior National Forest, Boundary Waters Canoe
Area Wilderness, and the Finland
State Forest.
Cities, towns and communities include: Alger, Avoy,
Baptism Crossing, Beaver Bay, Beaver Crossing, Bell Harbor, Castle Danger,
Cramer, Darby Junction, East Beaver Bay, Finland, Forest Center, Greenwood
Junction, Happy Wanderer, Highland, Illgen City, Isabella, Jay See Landing,
Jordan, Kelly Landing, Kennedy Landing, Larsmont, Lauren, Lax Lake, Little
Marais, London, Manitou Junction, Maple, Marcy, Martin Landing, McDougal
Lake, McNair, Murphy City, Nine Mile Lake, Norshor Junction, Prairie Portage,
Sawbill Landing, Scott Junction, Section Thirty, Silver Bay, Silver Creek,
Silver Rapids, Stewart, Toimi, Two Harbors, Waldo, Wales, Wheeler Landing,
White Iron, Whyte and Winter.
By the way, do not let the vast array of communities fool you...Most
are rural communities. The U.S. Census reports the total population of Lake
County, in 1997, at 10, 761. The amazing Lake Superior shoreline,
and inland forests, rivers and lakes, with beautiful scenery, nature and
water, and FISH.... and more water... and more beautiful scenery which dominate
Lake county.
