CHURCHES

o    St. Mary’s and St. Simon’s were officially closed as churches in August of 2008 due to a financial crisis.  St. Mary’s buildings were deactivated as a church.  St. Simon’s was closed and reopened as Our Lady of Hope Catholic Parish for the Catholic Community of Washington.  Father Gordon Mann is pastor as he was for both of the previous parishes.  All members of St. Mary’s and St. Simon’s had to reregister as new members of Our Lady of Hope.  From Vince Sellers, member of the parish and Director of the Daviess County Historical Society Museum. The OLD PERKINS CEMETERY 
located in Barr Township, Daviess County, Indiana

 The following gravestones and historical background information, of The Old Perkins Cemetery, was graciously donated, to be posted to this site, by Sheryl Hellums, who is a PERKINS descendant.  Thank you Sheryl Hellums!!!

The OLD PERKINS CEMETERY is one of the oldest cemeteries in Barr Township. It is located County Road 300 N., northeast of Montgomery, Indiana.

Elisha PERKINS was born in 1753.  He entered Indiana around 1814 from Kentucky. His wife was Elizabeth Mary SCOTT, born 1762.  They had 12 children, and most (possibly all) of the children were born in Kentucky.  In the year 1823, Elisha was appointed overseer of the poor of the township (Barr) also the following year he was re-appointed to the same position. He remained in the township until his death around1830.

Those buried in the OLD PERKINS CEMETERY are as follow:
    Josephine Doane age 20 died July 7-1875 (her mother was a Perkins)
    Elisha Perkins age 77 died April 19-1830
    Mary Perkins age 82 died June 24-1847
    Elisha Perkins age 93 died May 2-1875
    John Perkins age 82 died July 30-1872
    Ellenor Perkins age 75 died Aug.22-1871
    Alfred Perkins age 73 died Dec. 15-1877
    Asberry Perkins age 59 died Feb. 29-1876
    Mark Perkins age 53 died Dec. 1-1872
