Bartholomew County, Indiana History & Genealogy - 1875 Map

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY

     When Indiana was admitted to statehood, in 1816, the area which was to become Bartholomew County was in the possession of the Delaware Indians who had relocated to this area, from eastern Ohio, late in the 18th century.  Other tribes were located within this region, including the Shawnee , whose prominent members included Tecumseh and the Prophet "Tenskwatawa".   The Indians retained title until 1818.
*Bartholomew County was first created, from ceded Indian lands of the Delaware New Purchase (Delaware County) and
Jackson County, by the act of general assembly passed and approved on 9 January 1821.  Originally, Bartholomew County included a portion of present-day Brown County, which was not established until 1836.
     The new county was named in honor of General Joseph Bartholomew, of
Clark County, who was prominent in both the military and civil history of Indiana.
* County seat: Columbus.
