The geographic area of Texas is in the ecclesiastical province of San Antonio which includes the Archdioceses of San Antonio, with the suffragan dioceses of Dallas, Fort Worth, Amarillo, Lubbock, San Angelo, Laredo and El Paso and the Archdiocese of  Galveston-Houston, with the suffragan dioceses of Austin, Tyler, Beaumont, Victoria, Corpus Christi and Brownsville (Texas).

On July 3, 2000, Zenit.org reported that The Holy Father "...provided for diocesan care of Catholics along the Mexican border by creating the diocese of Laredo, Texas. The new diocese takes part of the area of the archdiocese of San Antonio and of the diocese of Corpus Christi..."  Bishop James A. Tamayo, the auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, has been named as the first Bishop of the new Diocese of Laredo, Texas.

January 1, 2005:  "The new Metropolitan Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will have six Suffragan Dioceses:  Austin, Tyler, Beaumont, Victoria, Corpus Christi and Brownsville.  The Metropolitan Archdiocese of San Antonio will retain seven Suffragan Dioceses: Dallas, Fort Worth, Amarillo, Lubbock, San Angelo, Laredo and El Paso."
