Research of Catholic Ancestors in Indiana
Select by County from the list below or enter a church name or town
in the
"Find in Page" option of your menu bar.
Please note: The geographic area encompassed by the
Dioceses and Parishes may vary slightly from the civil town/county
boundaries. Generally, the earlier the era being researched, the
more likely the pastors and missionaries served a wider geographic
area, so it may be helpful to learn more about the development of the
dioceses (see History Notes), check
neighboring counties, and research the civil county/state boundaries of
the era in question as well. Within the county area, I have tried
to place the parishes in order by the reported year of establishment
(oldest to newest) rather than by town or alphabetical order. It
is hoped this may help in identifying the still existing parishes which
were most likely to have been in existence during the time period being
researched.
Keep in mind some earlier churches no longer exist, others have been
renamed, and new churches have been built. Also, a church may
have been in existence for many years prior to it's having a resident
pastor...In such cases, it is likely that the priests who visited the
church (as a mission for instance) entered the sacramental records in
books at their own home parishes. Though an effort is being made
to include more information concerning such changes, this site is a
work in progress. Should you find an error, or have helpful
information to add, please contact Ann.

- St.
Philomena Church
[est. ca. 1842, closed after 1959]
- In 1959, "The Indiana Catholic and Record"
reported that St. Philomena's Church was founded about 1842, the first
church being built in 1844, and a second church was built in
1870. St. Philomena's was located in Franklin County, and, in
1959, was reported to be a mission of the Catholic Church at Floyd
Knobs. However, Alerding's book, A
History of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Vincennes,
(Indianapolis: Carlon and Hollenbeck. 1883), reports that St.
Philomena's was attended by the pastors of St. Mary's of the Rocks from
the beginning. Since St. Mary's-of-the-Rocks is much closer, it
appears likely that it was, indeed, the parish which would have been
the most likely to tend to the
congregation at St. Philomena's.

Gary, which at that time was within the Diocese of Fort Wayne:
"...When the city was laid out property was procured by Bishop
Alerding for the English people resident there, and a little later for
people of five large foreign groups. We call them "foreign"
groups because they were brought directly from Hungary, Slovakia,
Poland, Lithuania and Croatia, the United States Steel Corporation
having advertised in the newspapers of those countries for laborers..."

The paragraph is quoted in full below:
"The History of the Church is a record of the
mercies of God on the human family. Considered in this light, the
view that history is self-glorification is narrow in the extreme, and
lacks
the Christian instinct referring all things to God. The same
holds
good, be it the history of the Church in general, or of any portion of
it.
The purpose always is the glory of God and the salvation of
souls.
Such is the issue, and not the individual, not the missionary, not the
priest;
and therefore the Church records should be kept accurately and not
withheld
from publication. Gratitude prompts us to thank and glorify the
Giver
on High." -Rt. Rev. H. J. Alerding (1907)
