I recommend Pompeii, the Day a City Died by Robert Etienne, an inexpensive Discoveries series book, for a very good overview of Pompeii, its history, and its rediscovery.

Return to Pompeii

I recommend these books for further study of the Maya. Every book I have seen by the late Linda Schele is both entertaining and rich with information. I particularly like A Forest of Kings.

Breaking the Maya Code by Michael Coe tells the fascinating story of the deciphering of Mayan writing and explains the glyphs.

These complete translations of Jules Verne's 20000 Leagues under the Sea are currently in print:

  • I like the Naval Institute Press edition (available in hardcover and paperback), translated by Walter James Miller and Frederick Paul Walter, for its translation, notes, and graphics.
  • The recent Oxford's World's Classics edition, translated by William Butcher, is not illustrated but has some fascinating notes about Verne's early manuscripts, and is quite inexpensive.
  • The Signet Classic edition, translated by Brunetti, is also very affordable.

The Jules Verne Encyclopedia is a diverse collection on Verne material for both the enthusiast and scholar.

These excellent books contain some of the best information about with the Confederate Hunley and other Civil War era submarines.  Like every book about the Hunley, the very latest material is of course not included:
